When pilots guide vessels into busy tide-bound ports, or dock alongside quay walls, extremely precise navigation is essential. Minimizing under-keel clearance maximizes profit, especially if the vessel can enter and exit port earlier than normal. Accurate navigation is also vital in avoiding multi-million dollar damage to one’s own vessel, to other vessels, and to port infrastructure.
